Our Inspiration, Our Heart
“You know, if Meagan was still alive, we wouldn’t even know each other. By leaving, she’s brought us all together as a family. And what we do to honor her from now on is how she makes the impact she wanted to make in the world; maybe a lot more than she could have made had she chosen to stay.”
One of Meagan’s friends said this when Meagan’s family of choice gathered in Atlanta to celebrate her birthday in 2023. Meagan never wanted to be defined by her mental illnesses; throughout her adult life, she toggled back-and-forth between pursuing a career as an artist so she could embrace what she really wanted to do, and wanting to work in medical research to help people have a better life experience than she had.
Marilyn Monroe once said, “Sometimes things fall apart, so that better things can fall together." Meagan admired Marilyn for her ability to navigate the world with intelligence and grace. Both chose to leave at 36. Both strove to empower themselves and others through their artistry, even as they struggled with their own emotional wellness.
Art for wellness, self-empowerment through wellness, and a family of choice brought together by art; these are the reaching roots and open blooms of Sunflower Outreach.
